School in the village
There are pupils who, although they have reached 5th or 6th grade, have difficulties in writing and reading, or in mathematics, and are in fact in 2nd or 3rd grade. Assessments and workshops conducted by the Education in the Village Association, together with specialists and volunteers, for more than 4 years have shown that these pupils are lagging behind because they had difficulties in understanding when the lesson was taught in class and were not supported after school to overcome it. As a result, gaps remained in their minds and they could not perform further.
A second reason is the pandemic and the online school environment. These two years of pandemic have deepened these gaps even more and many children have lost their rhythm and are very disoriented.
A third reason is that there are simultaneous classes, with many students, where the teacher, no matter how hard he or she tries, does not physically have time for each student. Not as much as they need and they obviously fall behind. In the future, these pupils risk ending up on the verge of repeating or dropping out of school if there is no concrete plan for recovery and support.
During the remedial programs, I worked in small groups of 4/5 students and 1 to 1 and I noticed that this way they can overcome the blockages and catch up on the material. We have measured improvements.
However, in the long term, a lot of practice, a constant after school teaching programme and a lot of school counseling, psychological counseling is needed, because many of these children also have social problems in their families and in their relationship with their peers and teachers.
